University of Vienna - Department of Knowledge and Business Engineering - Austria
The University of Vienna is one of the largest universities in the German speaking area with approximately 63000 students and 5400 researchers. In plugIT the Faculty of Computer Science will participate, more specifically the Department of Knowledge and Business Engineering. The Faculty of Computer Science houses amongst many others the education programmes of Computer Science, Business Informatics, and the MBA Programme for Healthcare Management together with the Medical University of Vienna. The Department of Knowledge and Business Engineering is headed by Prof. Dr. Dimitris Karagiannis.
The Department of Knowledge and Business Engineering participates in all of these three programmes. One of its research foci is the design and analysis of visual languages and visualisations for the use in business informatics research and practice. Therefore it is reverted to a meta modelling approach that allows for the method independent conceptualisation of semi-formal languages, their technical implementation as well as their utilisation for different scenarios.
There has been and is participation in many national and international projects; among others in the EU projects REFINE and ADVISOR and the nationally funded projects eduBITE, eduWeaver, Semantic Culture Guide and Open Models. Staff of the department has extensive experience in the design and implementation of meta models, their visualisation and the organisational and professional introduction of these concepts. Furthermore competencies are available for the realisation of visual model-driven service oriented architectures and the treatment of semantic aspects in modelling and meta modelling such as ontological lifting and semantic model transformations.
